Welcome to ESSRE 2021!

Hello! We are the Bacteria Wannabes – while we were initially interested in bacteria as an indicator of diversity in soil, after research and discussion we realized that measuring protozoa diversity had a stronger correlation to overall soil diversity. This summer, we studied soil ecology for three weeks at Roland Park Country School. For the first half of the program, we tested soil biota and the chemicals of the soil in the backwoods. After performing statistical analysis and observing general data patterns, we designed and executed an experiment surrounding invasive trees’ effects on the soil ecosystem. This included research on protozoa, native and invasive tree root systems, and macronutrients. We sought to discover whether native trees were more incorporated into the ecosystem than invasive trees by observing protozoa diversity and measuring nutrient levels in soil surrounding those trees.
